Muir Woods National Monument

Muirwoods
Friday, I took a day off from work, and went to the Muir Woods park near Muir Beach, CA.

It is truly a beautiful place. Huge, tall trees. Streams. Wild life. Great place to hang out and hike, and take photographs.

I shot hand-held, and so had to keep the exposure time low - sometimes taking the same photograph twice to get one without camera shake. Also, as you walk along (and point the camera in different directions), the light can change drastically. If there was sun, it was pretty bright, and on the other side it was really dark.

My wide angle lens is a variable aperture zoom and goes from f/3.5 (widest) to f/4.5 (tightest?). I had to constantly watch the aperture and the shutter speed. As light changed, my most often used adjustment was the ISO.

I went from ISO 100 up to ISO 800, and for a few shots even went to ISO 1600.

Back to the photographs...

This one looks like a troll head to me. If you can't see it, click on the photograph, and see the notes to see what I mean.

Another thing to watch for in shots like this is getting the right exposure straight out of the camera. While you can adjust exposure in post-processing, the problem with doing that on such photographs is that you have some blown highlights (on purpose). If you overexpose, and then darken in post, the highlights are still blown out and do not adjust well. The areas where the highlights bleed into the other stuff looks weird.

If you underexpose and then lighten, the effect is not the same either. You will get highlights, but the bleed into the other areas again looks weird.
